Imbuljuta tal-Qastan is a traditional hot and spiced cocoa-based Maltese drink served after midnight mass at Christmas and at New Year’s Eve.

Ingredients

  • 450g dried chestnuts

  • 175g sugar

  • 50g drinking chocolate

  • 50g dark chocolate

  • Grated rind of 1 orange

  • Grated rind of 1 tangerine

  • Mixed spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, etc.)

  • Cloves

  • Water

Directions

  • Put the chestnuts in a pan.
  • Add sugar, drinking chocolate, dark chocolate, grated rind of 1 orange, grated rind of 1 tangerine, mixed spice and cloves.
  • Add enough water to cover the chestnuts
  • Bring to a boil and simmer until the chestnuts are tender, about 1 hour.
  • Serve hot in a cup or a bowl.
